Earlier this month, Michael Cassidy, a Christian veteran, single-handedly demolished a stautueย Satan. It had been installed in an Iowa Capitol building. Driven by his faith and conviction, Cassidy bought a plane ticket to Iowa without a clear plan. His inspiration partly came from the movie โField of Dreams.โ
In the moment, Cassidyโs disbelief soon turned into a conviction that action was necessary. He explained, โYeah, and it wasnโt a prank. It was a real Statue of Satan. And you know, the Satanists, some of them may think itโs just a joke, that theyโre there just trying to troll people, but the devil is real.โ
Upon reaching the Capitol, Cassidy found the place almost deserted, with just one person praying nearby. โI went to the Capitol. I didnโt know what to expect, whether there would be politicians there that I could yell at and say, โHey, you idiots, take this thing down!’โ

The shrine to Satan was placed surrounded by candles and holding a pentagram near the Captiolโs Christmas nativity scene. The retired U.S. Navy officer and former Congressional candidate peacefully turned himself over to police at the Iowa Capitol, after he ripped down and tore the head off of the display of the demonic idol Baphomet.
โThey ended up calling the cops over and we talked.โ Cassidy finished, โIn the end, they ended up giving me a citation and then they sent me on my way. So I didnโt get, I never got arrested. Thereโs no mugshot out there of me. I know a lot of people were asking about that.โ
According to then sentinel, Members of the Satanic Temple of Iowa legally acquired permission to mount the display in the Capitol atrium.
โThe world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the founders would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment,โ Cassidy told the outletย after the incident.
โAnti-Christian values have steadily been mainstreamed more and more in recent decades, and Christians have largely acted like the proverbial frog in the boiling pot of water. I saw this blasphemous statue and was outraged.โ
โMy conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree. And so I acted.โ
Cassidy ran for Congress in the State of Mississippi describing himself on his campaign a websiteย as a โChristian conservative who loves our nation and is committed to preserving the blessings of liberty.โ
In a statement posted on facebook, The Satanic Temple in Iowa said that the display was โdestroyed beyond repair.โ They wrote, โThis morning, we were informed by authorities that the Baphomet statue in our holiday display was destroyed beyond repair. We are proud to continue our holiday display for the next few days that we have been allotted.ย We ask that for safety, visitors travel together and use the 7 Tenets as a reminder for empathy, in the knowledge that justice is being pursued the correct way, through legal means.โ
Cassidy will be represented by retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and JAG attorney Davis Younts. โMy client was motivated by his faith to peacefully protest a display that is a direct affront to God,โ Younts said.
โWhen others, including elected leaders, were unwilling to act, he peacefully removed the display. It is my hope that the citation will be dismissed when my clientโs actions are understood and that he will not face prosecution because of his faith.โ
