The office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Friday that she had been hospitalized in Luxembourg after “sustaining an injury” during an official event marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
โSpeaker Emerita Pelosi is receiving excellent medical care from doctors and health professionals. She continues her work and regrets that she cannot attend the remaining CODEL events to honor the bravery of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,โ said spokesman Ian Kraig. โSpeaker Emerita Pelosi expresses her gratitude to our veterans and thanks the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.โ
He continued, โSpeaker Emerita Pelosi was deeply honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who served in World War IIโincluding her uncle, Johnny. She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.โ

The trip, which began Thursday, is part of a bipartisan congressional delegation attending the anniversary observances, along with veterans, their families, active-duty service members, government and military officials, and foreign dignitaries. “As we mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, it is a great privilege to join a distinguished bipartisan delegation to Belgium and Luxembourg to honor one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nationโs history,” Pelosi said in announcing the trip. “We commemorate the courage of our servicemembers who endured weeks of bitter winter to secure the victory of freedom over tyranny, not only for Europe but for the entire world.”
Pelosi had previously visited Belgium and Luxembourg in 2019 to commemorate the battleโs 75th anniversary. The Battle of the Bulge, the bloodiest battle on the Western Front of WWII, resulted in the highest number of American casualties during a surprise counteroffensive by more than 400,000 German troops. The Allies won the battle, which accelerated the fall of Adolf Hitler. Alongside Pelosi’s 2019 delegation, President-elect Donald Trump sent his own group led by former Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper to participate in the ceremony.
