NEW: Jim Carrey Comes Out of Retirement: ‘Needs the Money’

Jim Carrey, the beloved comedic actor who announced his retirement in 2022, is making a surprising return to Hollywood. Carrey will reprise his role as the eccentric Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the upcoming action-adventure comedy based on Sega’s popular video game series.

In a candid interview, Carrey explained his decision to return to acting after stepping away from the spotlight. When asked if the new script was the one he had previously said he would return for—“written in gold ink by angels”—Carrey responded with a laugh.

“That might have been a bit of an exaggeration,” he said to The Associated Press, referring to his past comments about retiring unless a role offered deeper spiritual meaning. “But yeah, you know, I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” he joked.

Carrey then delivered his signature brand of comedic honesty, adding, “I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become one of Carrey’s most commercially successful ventures in recent years. His portrayal of the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the first two films was widely praised, with Carrey channeling his trademark over-the-top energy. The first Sonic film, released in 2020, grossed over $300 million worldwide, with its 2022 sequel performing even better. The success of the films has solidified Carrey’s continued relevance in Hollywood, even after decades in the industry.

Sonics the Hedgehog 3, slated for release in 2024, will continue the high-energy story of the blue speedster and his arch-nemesis, Robotnik. At 62, Carrey remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and bankable stars.

Carrey had first hinted at stepping back from the public eye in 2022. During an interview with Kit Hoover from Access Hollywood while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey suggested he might be done with acting. “I’m probably retiring from my career, and I’m fairly serious about it,” he said.

However, he left the door open for a return, saying, “It depends – if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, and it tells me that it’s really important for people to see, I might continue down that road, but I’m taking a break.” Carrey added, “I really enjoy my quiet life, I love putting paint on canvas, and I really cherish my spiritual life. And I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Rising to fame in the 1990s with hits like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, Carrey became one of Hollywood’s biggest comedic stars. He also demonstrated his dramatic chops in acclaimed films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In addition to acting, Carrey is an outspoken artist and author, exploring themes of spirituality and social issues.

Whether driven by creative inspiration or humorously acknowledged financial need, Carrey’s return to the big screen ensures that fans will get at least one more dose of his unique brand of comedy. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to hit theaters in December 2024.
