NBCโs Lester Holt is out at Nightly News, the flagship show he has hosted for nearly a decade.
Holt, 65, announced he is stepping down in a memo sent to staffers Monday,ย ten years after he stepped in to replace longtime fixture Brian Williams on a full-time basis.
The veteran anchor will now only man his usual spot on Dateline,ย NBC Newsโ Executive Vice President of Programming Janelle Rodriguez saidย in a statement.
NBC โ whose assetย MSNBC just cancelled Joy Reidโs show The ReidOutย โย haveย yet to announce a replacement.
โ[Holt] will continue at the helm of Nightly until early summer,โย Rodriguez said, revealing how the anchor will then devoteย โhis energy to the rapidly-expanding powerhouse that is Dateline.โ
Holt โ previously the host of the showโs weekend edition โ began hosting Nightly News on weekdays in June of 2015, afterย a scandal surrounding reporting from theย Iraq War upended Williamsโ career.
He has since told staffers his time on the show was an โamazing rideโ โย doing so in a letter sent to Nightly and Dateline staffers Monday morning.
The principal anchor of โDatelineโ since September 2011 did not mention the showโs waning ratings, which are down year-over-year.
Instead, he expressed excitement about โcontinuing as anchor of โDateline NBCโย for the first time โin a full time capacityโ.

โI will be expanding my footprint on the broadcast and crafting โDateline โhours on subjects I care deeply about,โ the anchor added, in a memo since re-shared by the company.
โI am thrilled to be able to work more closely with my enormously talented friends at Dateline as the broadcast continues to grow and attract new viewers.โ
Dateline is currently the 14th most popular show on NBC and is viewed by more than 2.3million people, but like most legacy media broadcasts as of late, is down drastically in terms of viewership when compared with years prior.
Just two years ago, the magazine-style program thatโs regularly compared to CBSโs 60 Minutes or the PBS NewsHour had an average audience of more than 4million.
NBC Nightly News โ currently behind evening news frontrunner ABC World News Tonight โ is averaging 6.742 million total viewers, down one percent from this time last year.
The statistic, moreover, was recorded following some gains from the long-running program โ which over the summer was subject to some double digit dips inย total audience and in the hallowed 25-to-54-year-old demographic.
Back in July, the show was down 17 percent in total audience from the quarter before and 27 percent in the demographic most valued by advertisers, but has since managed to stop the bleeding.
However, a change in formatย already spawned a ratings crisis over at rival CBSย โ and Holt, for many viewers at home, has become a fixture.

Asked about Nightly Newsโ future during an interview with Esquire in late 2023, the anchor conceded: โYes, audiences are migrating. [But] how people consume us, thatโs going to continue to change.
โI have no idea how in seventy-five years,โ he added, after earning recognition stints on Today and MSNBC before that.
โBut Nightly News will exist.โ
Meanwhile, still sitting in the wings is Senior National Correspondent Tom Llamas, whom for years now has been speculated to be Holtโs likely successor.
In 2021, insiders told Page Six how Llamas was โclearly being groomed for a big roleโ, and sources told the Ankler in November how higher-ups at the network would be happy to replace Holt with Llamas due to the latterโs comparatively modest salary of $2.5million.
It is unclear how much Holt was paid for Nightly News.
Holtโs contract expires this year, and Llamas has experience as an Evening News anchor thanks to time as a weekend host for ABCโs still-successful World News Tonight.
Holt scored the job thanks experience garnered under a similar role supplementing Williams, who himself was a figure once synonymous with American news.
A decade later, it seems a changing of the guard is in store, at a time where networks like CBS, MSNBC, and CNN are implementing change to address shifting consumer habits โ and, perhaps, a new presidency.

โEverything about our country has changed, except the language used to describe it,โ he wrote, after making a rare appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers after Trumpโs win in November.
โThe problem, of course, is that this language is lazy, numbing and normalizing in a time of urgency and exigency,โ he went on, at this point offering his pieceโs de facto mission statement.
โItโs actually insulting, and a gross disservice to those watching and listening โ because it doesnโt match what they just saw or heard for themselves.โ
โIt was crushing to watch so many working journalists attempt to generate the words to accurately describe a visibly struggling and diminished president, seemingly unable to complete a sentence or a thought in his disastrous and final debate.โ
Not mentioning any names, the man who for years worked with the likes of Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski went on to offer one last parting shot at those who refused to face the truth.
โSay it with me: It is perhaps the ultimate irony that the electoral collapse of the Democratic Party in 2024 was triggered in large part by the man who ran to save the country and democracy โ the same man who then tried to stay too long at the fair.
โThere, I said it,โ he added as sort of signoff. โNow someone please say it into a microphone. You can do it.โ

For his final sign-off, the figure once synonymous with American airwaves told colleagues that โfollowing much reflection,โ he was leaving the company.
โThis is the end of a chapter and the beginning of another,โ Williams upon being succeeded by Holt, after joining NBC News in 1993.
โThere are many things I want to do, and Iโll pop up again somewhere,โ he said, before fading into relative obscurity.
A few years before, in 2015, a scandal saw him thrust from the seat he assumed from the legendary Tom Brokaw in 2004, after he was caught lying about a wartime story.

As Donald Trumpโs media foes are taken out one by oneโฆ fans wonder who will survive the bloodbath
ย
With Presidentย Donald Trumpโs mediaย enemies being taken out one by one,ย fans have been left wondering who is next on the chopping block โ and who will survive the bloodbath.
The week started off in full swing as MSNBCย canceled Joy Reidโs evening showย on Sunday.
The dismissal of her show was then followed up by NBC News confirming thatย Lester Holt was out at Nightly Newsย โย the flagship show he has hosted for nearly a decade.
MSNBC then axed three more starsย on Monday โย Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart and Ayman Mohyeldin โ according to theย New York Post,ย who obtained the insight from a source named only as โMSNBC insider.โ
With a slew of top media professionals getting the boot, many have shared who they think might be next to get ousted, including MSNBCโs Joeย Scarborough and his wifeย Mika Brzezinski.
The โMorning Joeโ co-hosts have long been vocal about their opposition toward Trump, even after visiting the Republican back in November in Mar-a-Lagoย to โrestart communications.โย
Meanwhile, other liberal media bigwigs โ who have been put under the spotlight for their overt disdain towards the new president โ may face more scrutiny in coming weeks amid the industry shakeup.
All eyes are on veteran anchors like George Stephanopoulos, Rachel Maddow, Peterย Alexander and Mary Bruce โ as fans guess who will survive the cable TV changes.
In just days, many media stars have been axed from their shows, some of which are known enemies of President Donald Trump. (Pictured: Trump on Monday)
MSNBC announced Sunday that Joy Reidโs show was canceled.ย Lester Holt announced he was leaving NBCโs Nightly News on Monday
Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski (MSNBC)
Although their show has not been axed, some people have called for Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarboroughโs slot to be culled, following the mass cancellations.
โMSNBC needs to fire Morning Joe and Mika! Not Joy Reid!!,โ one online user said.
Brzezinski wasย recently forced to make a legal note about Trumpย on the show, appearing to learn a lesson from ABC Newsโ mishap that ended in a hefty legal bill.
Scott Galloway, a guest on the show at the time, was discussing the reasons why Trump beat Kamala Harris in November when he incorrectly slammed the president.
โWe are in the midst of a series of small revolutions to correct income inequality. And the reason we put an insurrectionist and a rapist in office is because for the first time in our nationโs history, a 30-year-old man or woman isnโt doing as well as his or his or her parents were at third,โ Galloway said.
As the โgreat conversationโ ended, Brzezinski made sure to correct Galloway to his face.
โI want to make a comment about a word that was used in this interview. Donald Trump was tried civilly and was found libel of sexual abuse, not rape. But the judge in the case likened his actions to rape, but the liability was officially called sexual abuse.โ
Although Morning Joe has not been axed, some have called for it to be following the mass cancellations. (Pictured:ย Mika Brzezinski andย Joe Scarborough)
George Stephanopoulos (ABC News)ย
Stephanopoulos has also not been named as an anchor whose show was canceled, but his past comments on Trump have landed him and the network in the hot seat.
Following the media axes, people now believe his next in line as one person posted to X: โWhen is George Stephanopoulos leaving?โ
โAll we need now is the life of George Stephanopoulos to be gone,โ wrote another.
Stephanopoulos erroneously claimed on-air that the president-elect was found โliable for rapeโ โ rather than the correct phrasing of sexual abuse โ against writer E. Jean Carroll in March.
Trump sued Stephanopoulos and the network for defamation soon after the segment aired, accusing the anchor of making the statements with โmaliceโ and a disregard for the truth.
As part of the $16million settlement, Stephanopoulos was forced to issue a public apology.
Stephanopoulos has also not been named as an anchor whose show was canceled, but his past comments on Trump have landed him and the network in the hot seat
He has since isolated himself at the network, insiders told theย New York Post,ย with some suggesting he may be out of a job by the summer.
โGeorge seems miserable,โ one source said.
โHeโs definitely gone. Heโs a dead man walking for sure.โ
Others, though, said Stephanopoulos could remain at the network in a lower-profile way, possibly working on film and television projects.
Rachel Maddow (MSNBC)ย
All eyes are also on MSNBCโs Rachel Maddow, who has long been outspoken about her views on Trump, during the shocking cable TV shakeup.
โDo Rachel Maddow next,โ a user wrote online.
In fact, following Reidโs show being canceled, the president mentioned Maddow after saying that the network should pay restitution for โdamagingโ the nation, while also branding Reid a โmentally obnoxious racist.โ
โBased on her ratings, which were virtually non-existent, she should have been โcannedโ long ago, along with everyone else who works there,โ he said on his Truth Social page.
Trump then cited a litany of fellow hosts he felt deserved his derision, including Al Sharpton and Rachel Maddow.
MSNBCโs Rachel Maddow, who has long been outspoken about her views on Trump, could also be next in line.ย In fact, following Reidโs show being canceled, the president mentioned Maddow
The latter, the president claimed, โrarely shows up because she knows thereโs nobody watching and she also knows that sheโs got less television persona than virtually anyone on television except, perhaps, Joy Reid.โ
โThis whole corrupt operation is nothing more than an illegal arm of the Democrat Party,โ Trump added.
Peter Alexander (NBC News)ย
Alexander, who has already surfaced as a journalist to look out for in the briefing room with Trumpโs press secretary Karoline Leavitt, might now find himself in the spotlight after the shakeup at his network.
Some are even saying he might take over Holtโs spot on NBC Nightly News, but heโs been a vocal critic of Trumpโs administration so far.
โTheyโll give it to Peter Alexander,โ someone said online.
In January, Alexander repeatedly interrupted Leavitt after asking about Trumpโs deportation plan for migrants in the US.
Bringing up how Trump said they would โstart with the criminalsโ, Alexander asked whether violent offenders would really be deported before other immigrants.
He proceeded to point out how โnearly halfโ of the 1,179 migrants arrested on Sunday were found to โhave no prior criminal recordโ, citing NBCโs own reports.
Alexander, who has already surfaced as a journalist to look out for in the briefing room with Trumpโs press secretary Karoline Leavitt, might have all eyes on him now
Leavitt responded by suggesting that all undocumented migrants would be targeted equally, while touting the effort as โthe largest mass deportation operation in American history of illegal criminals.โ
However, the Weekend Today host and Chief White House correspondent kept on with his line of questioning, interrupting Leavitt mid-explanation.
โI apologize for interrupting. So to be clear, violent criminals do not receive precedence in terms of the deportations taking place,โ he asked.
โThe president has also said two things can be true at the same time. We want to deport illegal criminals, illegal immigrants from this country,โ Leavitt amicably explained.
ย Mary Bruce (ABC News)ย
While Mary Bruce remains in her legacy position at ABC News, all eyes have been on her since Trumpโs inauguration after she went after his appointed press secretary, Leavitt.
During a recent press briefing, she asked Leavittย about Trumpโs federal funding freeze, and what she framed as โconfusionโ surrounding the subject.
This earned one of the sternest rebuffs from Leavitt of the day, showing the secretaryโs ability to not mince words. Trump rescinded the order anyway, following pushback from House Republicans
โSome of the confusion I think may be here with this pause on federal funding โ youโve made it clear youโre not stopping funds that go directly to individuals,โ Bruce asked before the order was nixed, as many engaged in needless hysteria.
โBut there certainly are lots of organizations that receive funding and then may pass along a benefit,โ she pointed out. โMeals on Wheels for one โ they provide meals for over 2.2 million seniors.โ
All eyes have also been on Mary Bruce, another legacy media journalist whoโs gone after Leavitt
โWhat is the presidentโs message to Americans out there many of whom supported him and voted for him, who are concerned that this is going to impact them directly?โ the journalist whoโs spent 18 years at ABC asked, growing increasingly animated.
โEven if, as you said, the funding isnโt coming directly to their wallets.โ
Visibly fed-up, Leavitt offered a response that appeared to put Bruceโs inquiries to bed.
โI have now been asked โ and answered โ this question four times,โ she began, setting out on a clear, concise explanation.
โTo individuals at home who receive direct assistance from the federal government, you will not be impacted by this federal freeze,โ she continued.
Joy Reid (MSNBC)ย
One liberal anchor who has been open about her disdain for Trump โ and has since had her show canceled โ is Joy Reid.
On Sunday it was announced that Reidโs show, The ReidOut, was pulled from MSNBC.ย
Hours after the news came out, MSNBC bosses said they wereย struggling to get a hold of Reidย to ask her if sheโll do a final show.ย
Network president Rebecca Kutler revealed the ominous silence while addressing staffers of The Reid Out over the weekend following its cancellation,ย Status Newsย reported.
โWe are waiting to get a response from Joy and her team about how she would like to handle that, and we want to defer to her on that,โ Kutler told staff.
โThe hope is that we will have a final show with Joy.โ
After not commenting on her firing and being unusually quiet on TikTok, Reid finally addressed her showโs cancelation on Monday as she wiped away many tears (pictured)
After not commenting on her firing and being unusually quiet on TikTok, Reidย finally addressed her showโs cancellationย on Monday.
โIโve been through every emotionโฆ anger, rage, disappointment, hurtโฆ guilt. You know, [ a feeling] that I let my team lose their jobs,โ Reid said during a Zoom conversation with the Win With Black Women podcast.
โBut in the end, where I really landโฆ is just gratitude. Just pure gratitude and gratitude. Not just because people would take the time to get on a call like this or to take care of me. But also that my show had value.โ
Reid broke down as she explained that sheโs not sorry for having gone โhard on so manyโ progressive issues like Black Lives Matter or immigrant rights on her primetime slot.
โWhether itโs talking about any of these issues and, yes, whether itโs talking about Gaza and the fact that we as the American people have a right to object, to have a right to object to little babies being bombed,โ Reid went on.
โAnd and where I come down on that is Iโm not sorry. I am not sorry that I stood up forย those things because those things are of God.
โIโm not sorry, Iโm just proud of my show,โ she concluded.
Kutler insistedย Trump was not a factor in the decision and the networkโs changes were made based on โdata analysis and programming strategyโ that she believes will โbest position MSNBC for the year ahead.โ
Holt, 65, announced on Monday that he is stepping down in a memo sent to staffers, ten years after he stepped in to replace longtime fixture Brian Williams on a full-time basis. (Pictured: Holt in November 2023)
The veteran anchor will now only man his usual spot on Dateline, NBC Newsโ Executive Vice President of Programming Janelle Rodriguez said
She said the showโs cancellation was part of a โbroader slate of programming changes that will be laid outโ on Monday.
The showโs staffers reportedly expressed โfrustration and disbeliefโ that they learned of the showโs fate through media reports and not the networkโs leadership.
Kutler confirmed the showโs staff has been terminated but will be paid until April and receive severance.
The showโs 7pm ET time slot will be replaced by a panel show co-hosted by Symone Sanders Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele.

MSNBCโs Katie Phang was informed over the weekend that her show โThe Katie Phang Showโ is being canceled
Jonathan Capehartโs weekend show was also axed on MSNBC
The principal anchor of โDatelineโ since September 2011 did not mention the showโs waning ratings, which are down year-over-year.
Instead, he expressed excitement about โcontinuing as anchor of โDateline NBCโ for the first time โin a full time capacity.โ

Dateline is currently the 14th most popular show on NBC and is viewed by more than 2.3million people, but like most legacy media broadcasts as of late, is down drastically in terms of viewership when compared with years prior.
Katie Phang (MSNBC)ย
Phang, 49, was informed over the weekend that her show โThe Katie Phang Showโ is being canceled.
Phang is now the networkโs legal correspondent, after already serving as legal analyst forย NBCUniversal since 2017.
Her show is filmed from MSNBCโs South Florida studios, which the network is now set to shutter, sources told the Post.
It remains unclear when she will host her final installment.
Ayman Mohyeldinโs weekend show was also cut. His final episode is set forย April 20 at 7pm
Jonathan Capehart (MSNBC)ย
His show, โWeekend with Jonathan Capehartโ, was also canceled on Monday.
It also remains unclear when he will host his final show, but he is said to be getting a new show during a different time slot. Details of that have not yet been announced.
Ayman Mohyeldin (MSNBC)ย
It was also announced that Mohyeldin, who hosts Aymanย Mohyeldin Reports, will broadcast its final episode on April 20 at 7pm, a spokesperson confirmed.
Mohyeldin, 45, and Capehart are said to be getting new shows in different time slots โ though the details surrounding them have yet to be announced.
