Dems In Disarray: Senator Heard Screaming At Colleagues Amid Govt. Shutdown Threat

Press reports indicated that someone believed to be Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) was heard screaming during a private Democratic senatorsโ€™ lunch on Thursday amid heated debate over the looming government shutdown. While Democrats remained tight-lipped as they exited the hour-long meeting, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters, โ€œYouโ€™ll hear from me soon.โ€ When contacted by Fox News Digital, Gillibrandโ€™s office could not confirm that she was the individual who was heard.

Senate Democrats remain divided on how to handle the House-passed stopgap spending bill intended to avert a government shutdown, with some members inclined to support it while others appear willing to risk a lapse in funding. โ€œTheyโ€™ve been debating what to do, and thereโ€™s been people who feel strongly on both sides,โ€ a Democratic source familiar told Fox News.

As of Thursday afternoon, several lawmakersโ€”including Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.)โ€”shared videos on social media announcing that they would vote against the short-term spending bill, or continuing resolution (CR). โ€œIโ€™ve seen the videos that theyโ€™re going to shut it down,โ€ Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., a staunch advocate of keeping the government open, told reporters. โ€œIโ€™m like, thatโ€™s spicy. Spicy, I donโ€™t know,โ€ he added sarcastically. โ€œI donโ€™t know if theyโ€™ll do it or not.โ€

He added: โ€œAny party should never shut the government down.โ€ He also said it would be โ€œa gift for the Republicansโ€ for Democrats to block the House-passed CR. โ€œIn fact, if anything, I think, theyโ€™re effectively daring us to do that.โ€ The Pennsylvania Democrat further criticized his colleagues, recalling, โ€œIt wasnโ€™t that long ago before we were lecturing that you can never shut the government down. So thatโ€™s kind of inconsistent.โ€ Fetterman continued: โ€œWe can all agree that itโ€™s not a great CR, but thatโ€™s where we are and thatโ€™s the choice.โ€

Warner, meanwhile, defended himself to reporters Thursday, explaining there are โ€œno good choices.โ€ When he was asked if he thought a shutdown would be better for his constituents in Virginia, he said, โ€œIโ€™m saying both are awful.โ€

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., who serves a state won by President Donald Trump, said he hasnโ€™t โ€œmade a decisionโ€ on the Houseโ€™s short-term spending bill. He said the bill has โ€œsignificant problemsโ€ and expressed concern that โ€œthings could actually get worseโ€ because of the CR, specifically referencing the administrationโ€™s partnership with Elon Musk. โ€œI also recognize that government shutdowns arenโ€™t good,โ€ Kelly added.

Shortly afterward, Kelly shared a post on X, revealing he wonโ€™t support the spending bill. โ€œI cannot vote for the Republican plan to give unchecked power to Donald Trump and Elon Musk. I told Arizonans Iโ€™d stand up when it was right for our state and our country, and this is one of those moments,โ€ the post read.

With a partial government shutdown looming and the Senate preparing to vote on a House-passed funding measure designed to avert it, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced on Thursday that he โ€œwill vote to keep the government open and not shut it down.โ€ He said that while the โ€œbill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse.โ€
