Trump Slams Obama, Biden For Russia-Ukraine Fallout

President Donald Trump said late last month he was disappointed with Russia for launching missile strikes while efforts were underway to broker a peace agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking with reporters before boarding Air Force One, Trump addressed a wide range of topics, including the Russia-Ukraine peace talks, negotiations with Iran, and the recent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre.

Trump noted that his meeting with Zelenskyy ahead of Pope Francisโ€™ funeral had gone โ€œvery well.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll see what happens over the next few days,โ€ Trump said at the time. โ€œI was very disappointed that missiles were flying, by Russiaโ€ฆvery disappointed.โ€

Trump said that Zelenskyy brought up Crimea during their meeting, calling it a key point of contention for the Ukrainian leader.

Reports indicate that U.S. officials have floated a potential ceasefire proposal that would include recognizing Russiaโ€™s control of Crimeaโ€”territory it annexed in 2014โ€”and freezing current frontlines. However, Zelenskyy has made it clear that Crimea remains a non-negotiable red line.

In 2022, Zelenskyy said the Russian war against Ukraine and against the entire free Europe โ€œbegan with Crimea and must end with Crimea โ€“ and its liberation,โ€ according to a report from Axios.

Zelenskyy reaffirmed his governmentโ€™s position, dismissing any proposal that would acknowledge Russian sovereignty over Crimea. Trump, meanwhile, placed the blame for the loss of Crimea on the prior U.S. administrations of Presidents Obama and Biden, criticizing their handling of the region.

โ€œCrimea was given away by Barack Hussein Obama, and by Biden, like 11 or 12 years ago. Thatโ€™s a long time ago,โ€ Trump told reporters. โ€œI donโ€™t know how he could bring up Crimea, because thatโ€™s been a long time. Nobody brought it up for 12 years, and now theyโ€™re bringing it up now. So, I told them, I told him, he should maybe go back to Obama, ask him why they gave it up. They gave it without a shot being fired by him.โ€

As far as current negotiations about reaching peace, Trump said he wanted Putin to โ€œstop shooting, sit down and sign a deal.โ€

โ€œWe have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it and be done with it,โ€ the president said.

Trump went on to say that the U.S. is respected once again after he took office.

โ€œThereโ€™s no more games,โ€ he said. โ€œWe have somebody that knows what heโ€™s doing, not like the previous person who didnโ€™t have a clue.โ€

Following Russiaโ€™s missile attack, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to threaten new sanctions on Moscow.

โ€œThere was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days. It makes me think that maybe he doesnโ€™t want to stop the war, heโ€™s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through โ€˜Bankingโ€™ or โ€˜Secondary Sanctions?โ€™ Too many people are dying!!!โ€ heย said.

He also criticized Zelensky, however, after the Ukrainian leader took Crimea negotiations off the table.

โ€œUkrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is boasting on the front page of The Wall Street Journal that, โ€˜Ukraine will not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea. Thereโ€™s nothing to talk about here.โ€™ This statement is very harmful to the Peace Negotiations with Russia in that Crimea was lost years ago under the auspices of President Barack Hussein Obama, and is not even a point of discussion,โ€ Trumpย wroteย on his Truth Social platform.
