A large pothole at Tanhouse Road and Bodmin Hill in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, had been a safety hazard for months. After delays in official repairs, an anonymous person filled it with concrete in May 2023. While this brief fix provided relief, Cornwall Council quickly removed it, citing safety concerns and the lack of authorization.
The road had been closed in April due to drainage issues but repairs were delayed for over a month. After the DIY fix, Cornwallโs road maintenance company, Cormac, re-closed the road. The council is now investigating the individual, who also removed warning signs.
This incident highlights frustrations with local government delays and budget cuts, leading to a backlog of repairs. Cornwall Councilor Colin Martin criticized the lack of resources and prioritized maintenance on busier roads. The council is asking the public for information on the repairer, pointing out the risks of unauthorized fixes.
This reflects a broader trend of citizens stepping in when government action is slow, raising concerns about safety and accountability.
