Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sparked controversy on Wednesday during a House Oversight Committee hearing when he covered his ears in response to sharp criticism from Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA). The tense exchange highlighted the ongoing debate over the U.S. Postal Serviceโs (USPS) financial troubles and the effectiveness of DeJoyโs leadership and reforms.
The hearing, titled โOversight of the U.S. Postal Service,โ focused on evaluating USPSโs progress under DeJoyโs tenure. While DeJoy defended his strategies and awarded himself an โAโ for leadership, the self-assessment drew immediate backlash.
โYou canโt give yourself that grade,โ Rep. McCormick fired back, pointing to USPSโs continued struggles. In response, DeJoy retorted, โI just did,โ before dismissing McCormickโs remarks with, โYouโre talking to yourself.โ
McCormick, visibly frustrated, accused DeJoy of symbolizing the lack of accountability plaguing USPS. โYou are responsible for the fall of the Postal Service,โ McCormick charged.
The USPSโs financial woes took center stage, with lawmakers questioning the viability of DeJoyโs 10-year โDelivering for Americaโ plan, which he claims will restore profitability. Despite these assurances, the Postal Service reported a $6.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2023, adding to the ongoing deficit concerns.
Chairman James Comer (R-KY) expressed skepticism, noting that the Postal Serviceโs financial losses remain staggering. โWhen you predicted the Postal Service could break even, did you not foresee these issues?โ Comer asked, emphasizing the burden of rising personnel and retirement costs.
Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) added to the scrutiny, discussing the Trump Administrationโs Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiatives and urging USPS to adopt more cost-effective practices. Sessions noted, โThe USPS needs to prioritize savings and explore efficiency improvements.โ
In response, DeJoy maintained his confidence in his plan, emphasizing efforts to cut costs and boost revenue. โWe are introducing new products and reducing operating expenses. This is the best path forward,โ he stated.
While DeJoy signaled openness to collaboration, tensions in the hearing underscored the significant challenges still facing USPS, with lawmakers divided on whether current reforms are sufficient.
