Political analyst Mark Halperin noted that Vice President JD Vanceโs tenure stands out from other vice presidents in the โmodernโ era.
In the early weeks of President Donald Trumpโs second term, Vance has shown himself to be the most active vice president since Dick Cheney. Halperin, speaking on โThe Morning Meeting,โ pointed out that while Vanceโs term is still in its early stages, he has already distinguished himself in positive ways compared to both Cheney and former Vice President Al Gore.
โWe never know whatโs gonna happen. He could crash and burn. Trump could turn against him, although heโll never โ Don Jr., and Tucker [Carlson] will never turn against him,โ Halperin said. โAnd so, I will say, if you look at the modern history, influential vice presidents who had great relationships with the president โ little tension and super sway with the staff and the ability to be their own person but also a team player, you can look at Al Gore. You can look at Cheney.โ
โThis is unprecedented in our time, whatโs happening right now โ his influence and the fact that everybody likes him. And he knows his lane,โ he continued. โThereโs no danger of what happened with Gore, with, you know, wanting to start his own political operation. No danger of what happened with Cheney, where Cheney overshadowed the president in some ways after 9/11. Like, this is unprecedented whatโs happening here. And heโs proven to be so skillful.โ
Vance has taken a leading role on several key issues, including negotiating a deal to prevent a nationwide TikTok ban, challenging European elites, and leveraging his Senate connections to help advance critical cabinet nominees. He is also a strong advocate for the Trump administrationโs priorities, serving as a chief spokesman for the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement and defending the presidentโs agenda. โVance carries credibility with so many of these senators, and at a minimum, can be a radar for how theyโre viewing things and inform the White House in terms of its own legislative strategy. So yeah, he definitely plays multiple parts for Trump,โ Republican strategist Scott Jennings previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. โObviously, communications is public-facing, and thereโs also behind-the-scenes legislative strategy. It was a great pick for Trump.โ
Podcast host Joe Rogan also praised Vance in January after his CBS News interview with host Margaret Brennan, calling it โamazingโ and โa masterclass.โ Rogan credited the vice president with skillfully countering Brennanโs talking points. Vance appeared on โFace the Nationโ on January 26, where he answered Brennanโs questions on topics such as the economy and immigration.
โHeโs great. Thank God for that guy,โ Rogan said. โHeโs so good at dismantling those dopey people and just breaking down โ she was like, โThis is a country built on immigrants.โ Heโs like, โYes, that doesnโt mean that 240 years later we have to have the dumbest immigration policy possible.โโ
